Assisted Living Facility Profile
Number of Facilities – According to a 2004 report published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are approximately 36,000 assisted living residences in the United States housing more than 900,000 people.
Size – The average assisted living community has 58 units. However, assisted living facility size varies greatly and facilities may be much smaller or larger.
Fees – Costs for assisted living residences vary greatly and depend on the size of units, services provided, and location. In 2006, assisted living facilities reported charging an average monthly fee of $2,627 for private units. About half used tiered prices for bundles of services. Twenty two percent reported charging a single, all-inclusive rate.
Apartment Size – Fifty-one percent of assisted living units are studio or efficiency apartments, 39 percent are one-bedroom apartments, and six percent have two bedrooms.
Services – Assisted living residences typically provide or coordinate:
* 24-hour supervision;
* Three meals a day plus snacks in a group dining room; and
* A range of services that promote resident quality of life and independence, including:
o Personal care services (help with eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, etc.);
o Various health care services;
o Medication management;
o Social services;
o Supervise persons with cognitive disabilities;
o Social and religious activities;
o Exercise and educational activities;
o Arrangements for transportation;
o Laundry and linen service; and
o Housekeeping and maintenance.
Fire Safety – Ninety-seven percent of assisted living facilities built after 1995 have sprinklers and smoke detectors in all common areas. Ninety percent have sprinklers and 91 percent have smoke detectors in residents’ rooms.
